Wildfire closes 2 roads on Roan

A lightning-caused blaze on the Roan Plateau that ignited Saturday is expected to continue burning through today and Tuesday, according to David Boyd of the Bureau of Land Management.

The Water Creek Fire that is burning in tall trees about 10 miles northwest of Rifle grew Sunday to 170 acres.

Two main roads to the Roan Plateau including the Cow Creek Road and JQS Road were closed Sunday as about 100 firefighters battled the blaze near roads and natural barriers, but let the blaze burn in other areas, Boyd said.

No structures are threatened by the fire with smoke that can be seen from Interstate 70.

The fire was fueled over the weekend by increasing heat, low humidity and strong winds, Boyd said.
