Wildfire on Roan expected to grow

A wildfire reported Saturday morning on the Roan Plateau had consumed 150 acres and is expected to grow, officials said.

The Water Creek Fire, which is burning in heavy timber 10 miles northwest of Rifle, was caused by lightning.

No structures are threatened, said David Boyd, fire information officer with the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management.

More than 50 firefighters and six aircraft managed the fire Saturday, letting it burn in areas while suppressing it it at roads and strategic natural barriers, Boyd said.

High winds, low humidity and increasing temperatures forecast for western Colorado fueled the blaze, Boyd said.

In fact, the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for western Colorado through today as officials expect the Water Creek Fire to grow.

Because of the high fire potential in the area, Boyd and other officials urged the public to be cautious about burning anything in the days ahead.
