WinterStart begins Nordic ski race series

If your skis are skinny without a radical sidecut and your ski poles serve a real function, you know winter never starts until WinterStart.

This 5K noncompetitive Nordic ski event begins the annual race series hosted by the Grand Mesa Nordic Council.

It also starts winter for the skaters and flat-trackers who spend hours enjoying the efforts of the council’s snow-grooming on Grand Mesa.

There are four races, and according to the rules, if you (non)compete in three of them you may get a Nordic council T-shirt sometime in the future.

Either way, renewing your Nordic Council membership supports some pretty decent skiing.

WHAT: Grand Mesa Nordic Council’s WinterStart, with 5K classic and freestyle ski races.

WHERE: Skyway Nordic Center, entry fee is $10 for Nordic council members, $15 for nonmembers.

WHEN: Dec. 4, registration at 10 a.m. in the Skyway parking area, races at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

HOW: Information at 434-9753. Inclement weather? Check the GMNC website at http://www.gmnc.org.
