An adult blue heron watches over two young siblings in the top of a cottonwood tree in a nest near Rifle. Herons like to nest in rookeries where usually there will be more than one nest. This rookery has at least six active nests.
Visitors to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park peer over the Gunnison Overlook near the visitor’s center on the south rim side. The summertime is a busy time for staff at the one of the newest National Parks. The canyon’s gorge plunges nearly 3,000 feet to the roaring Gunnison River below, which visitors can see from many of the overlooks.
