Where are the rattlesnakes?

By Bill Haggerty
05/11/2013

It’s hard to say what keeps tourists at bay. Maybe it’s just a name. Now, I don’t want to jump into a Chamber-of-Commerce-type argument about whether we should rename Colorado National Monument, but how about Rattlesnake Canyon? It’s not as well-traveled as some of the other canyons around here, canyons with more glamorous names like Monument Canyon or Unaweep Canyon. Tourists don’t necessarily flock here, even though it contains the second-highest ...

Get there before it’s hot!

By Bill Haggerty
04/27/2013

The seasons changed again last week. Before it happens once more and temperatures hit 100, now might be a good time to race up to Colorado National Monument for a five-mile loop hike between Monument and Wedding Canyons. Or, if you’re in good shape this early in the hiking season, you could try a little more strenuous 6.3-mile hike all the way up (or down) Monument Canyon. There are two trail heads for Monument Canyon Trail. You can access the loop trail between Monument and ...

THE SWELL LIFE

By Bill Haggerty
04/07/2013

“You may not share my point of view, or see the world the way I do, I hope it doesn’t matter much to you.”  — Raul Malo, Sinners and Saints, 2010 From my point of view, the San Rafael Swell is, well, swell.  The swell is a large geologic anticline, a huge dome formed by pressure from underneath the earth’s surface, and it’s located just west of Green River, Utah, about 100 miles west of here.  According to the Bureau of Land ...

Fine at County Line

By Bill Haggerty
03/23/2013

The cottonwood tree outside my office window shows signs of budding. The long, slender branches of globe willows in town are slowly beginning to turn a little yellow-greenish.  Finally, after a long cold winter, the spring equinox, which occurred just the other day, ushered in longer, warmer days.  Streams and creeks in this area are running a little milky with low-elevation snow melt. Mud at the Bureau of Land Management’s Lunch Loop recreational area adjacent to ...

Valley with a plan: Plenty of discussion about plan for valley development

By Bill Haggerty
03/09/2013

Does hearing the term “Regional Management Plan” make you sleepy?  How many trees does it take to write an RMP? If you’re young enough and smart enough, can you read an entire RMP before the next one is written in 20 to 25 years? The Grand Junction Bureau of Land Management office recently issued its draft RMP and accompanying draft Environmental Impact Statement for the 1 million acres of BLM property surrounding our Grand Valley. It’s available for public ...

West Bench ski getaway

By Bill Haggerty
02/23/2013

In an effort to spread out Nordic skiing pressure and parking congestion on top of Grand Mesa, two of us took a shorter drive to the West Bench Trail, which is on the way to the top of the mesa, yet only an hour from downtown Grand Junction.  The report: Snow was great, track was fast, crowds were nonexistent. I first skied this trail three decades ago. In fact, I learned how to telemark ski here, down some of the chutes and runs on the far side of this bench. They magically ...

Get muddy, rediscover
Gold Star Canyon

By Bill Haggerty
02/09/2013

The hike into Gold Star Canyon is a bit tricky right now because of melting snow. Of course, the first half-mile up and into this amphitheater-type canyon is tricky anyway, and not for those who like flat, level ground for hiking. This trail climbs, twists and winds its way 500 feet up in elevation within a half mile. A sturdy pair of boots and a hiking stick are in order here. Once you top that first bench, though, it’s a piece of cake. Muddy chocolate cake, but a piece of cake ...

Top of the Pines: Get up there and enjoy majestic San Juans

By Bill Haggerty
01/26/2013

Breathe deep.  No, not here. Get out of town. Then, breathe deep.  Fresh air does so much for our health and vitality. It clears the head, clears the lungs and invigorates body, mind and spirit.  Hopefully a little storm action this weekend will blow the haze out of our happy valley, so we can enjoy some fresh air here. In the meantime, get out of Dodge. I met a friend in Montrose this past week, and we headed south to Top of the Pines, a Ouray County open-space ...

Recent snow, cold make monument perfect place to cross-country ski

By Bill Haggerty
01/12/2013

Drive time and distance: 27 minutes; 16.2 miles. That’s the best reason I can think of to cross-country ski on Colorado National Monument right now. This trip cuts the drive-time in half from what we’re used to in traveling to Grand Mesa. Skiing across the top of Liberty Cap Trail off Rim Rock Drive in the monument is a sweet glide, especially after the road opens after a winter snowstorm. Most ardent hikers in this area know how to access Liberty Cap Trail from the bottom. ...
