5 apply for Butler’s spot on council

Five contenders have applied for an appointment to a District E Grand Junction City Council seat vacated by the death of Councilor Harry Butler.

The applicants are Martha Scott, Teresa Black, Duncan McArthur, Les Miller and Kenneth Harris.

City councilors tentatively decided Monday to interview the applicants and choose a replacement during a 5 p.m. meeting July 10 at Grand Junction City Hall, 250 N. Fifth St.

Applicants were required to write a letter expressing their intent to be appointed to the vacant seat. Some applicants also included resumes.

McArthur is the only applicant who ran in the last election. McArthur is the owner of the subcontracting business, Catalina Bros. and has worked for organizations to provide government affairs services.

Scott has lived in Grand Junction for 24 years. She has been a job coach and a substitute teacher for School District 51 for 18 years. She is the former owner of a gardening business, I Feel Good Gardening, and is a volunteer chaplain for St. Mary’s Hospital and Unity Church.

Black is the executive director for the Alzheimer’s Association and has worked for a number of local nonprofit groups, including serving as executive director of Homeward Bound of the Grand Valley from 2004 to 2008.

Black currently volunteers for the Boy Scouts of America, Mesa County’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and the Trips, Dreams & Memories Foundation.

Miller has lived in Grand Junction for 25 years and serves on the board of Grand Junction’s Downtown Development Authority.

A longtime resident, Harris has worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, the Colorado Division of Wildlife and as a construction inspector for Mesa County, among other jobs.
