How did 84 Lumber get started?
84 Lumber was started in 1956 in Eighty Four, Pa. and now has over 250 stores.  I (Joe) grew up in the Texas panhandle and went to college in east Texas.

How did you get started in the building industry?
I started in Amarillo, Texas almost 4 years ago working for Mike Graham who ran the yard here in Grand Junction for over 20 years.
Maggie Hardy-Magerko, who now owns the company grew up in the 84 culture and was given the company by her father Joe Hardy, the founder of 84 Lumber

How has the industry changed since you got started?
I have only been in the industry for four years. I have not seen a whole lot of change. The recovery from the down turn in 2008 has slowly changed business for the better in the Valley.  It hasn’t fully recovered yet but we have made great strides.

What should consumers look for in a new home? What kind of questions should consumers ask a builder before they sign a contract?
The key item that a new home owner should look at when building a home is energy efficiency. Windows and doors are the main 84 Lumber focus to increase energy efficiency throughout the home. Make sure your builder is using a reputable window company that provides a lifetime warranty and, even more importantly, has a good reputation for handling problems that may occur. Having a dedicated service professional in the area is a key component to being able to handle window service issues.  Reputable subcontractors are just as important as a good builder because they are installing your windows and doors. An experienced framer installing your windows and doors will save you a lot of headaches down the road.

Is there a particular style of home that you consider your specialty or prefer to build?
We build pre-sold homes for builders as well as spec houses. Homeowner builds are also a big part of our business. We are contractor focused but home-owner friendly. We are ready, willing and able to provide anyone the materials they need to build a new home or remodel their existing home.

What is the most unusual feature you’ve put in a home?
Nothing that is typically discussed in polite company (12-man shower, bidet, and stone effigy).

What do you enjoy when you’re not working?
I coach my son in club soccer and am a member of Victory Life Church.

My wife of 2 years and I, along with our two children, moved here in November 2013 from Amarillo, Texas.

What do you enjoy about living in western Colorado?
The people and the mountains.

What do you see as up-and-coming trends in the building industry?
Outdoor kitchens have been a trend the last few years. I expect more outdoor living space to be a continuing trend in the future.

How is a brand-new home safer or more comfortable than a 20 or 30-year old home?
The energy efficiency of  a new home is definitely improved with advances in window and door technology, improving the comfort of a new home. The advancements in engineered wood products and updated city codes have increased the safety of newer homes significantly.
