I’ll admit that, for just a minute or two while driving the customized 2017 Ford F-150 4x4 Supercrew Lariat from Western Slope Ford, I did get the thought in my head “I wonder what it would be like to pilot an aircraft carrier…”
That’s not to say that the F—150 I drove was all that difficult to drive, but I think the fact it is a deep gray color helped.
This F-150 helped me begin to see the appeal of a lifted truck. The commanding view of the road is a comfortable feeling, and the effortless bit of driving I did on the rough pavement at the Loma river access and on dirt and gravel at my photography point really emphasized some advantages: rolling easily over small trenches and large potholes, for example.
The fact is, it looks cool, and the choices made to make this particular F-150 stand out add up to a solid and understated confidence.  The all-gray body with limited accents (including dark gray grille and bumpers) is almost elegant and makes the gloss black and chrome highlighted 20-inch wheels with 35-inch tires just punctuation on the powerful sentence of its looks.
The same color scheme slides to the inside, with dark gray leather and just hints of brushed metal accents.  A dark window tint was added to the mix with the other customizations.
Side steps were definitely useful getting in, but less vertically-abled drivers may find them high as well (I’m 6’10”, so I just slid out, but still needed to step up).
On the road, it handles like the big vehicle you know it is.  As I’m used to much smaller, lower vehicles, it took a bit of getting used to, but not too much. Backing up and parking was made much easier by the rear-view parking camera and reverse sensing system.  The blind-spot monitor also helped when changing lanes, lighting up an alert in the side-view mirrors.
On the highway, the 3.5L ECOBOOST engine had no trouble accelerating and keeping highway speeds, and it felt good on the road. I enjoyed that commanding view.
In addition to the lift kit and the wheels/tires, the truck comes with a from-the-dealer spray-in bedliner from Line X, so don’t fear to do some work. It’s not just a pretty face, after all.  Granted, I wouldn’t want to be the one to help you heft a buddy’s couch that far up into the bed, but it’d be your truck and your choice.
The question of warranty is one that always comes up with customizations, and buying it new from the dealership has advantages. All the parts are warrantied: the original Ford parts by Ford under the standard five year/60k Powertrain Limited Warranty and the three year/36k bumper-to-bumper. The custom parts are warrantied by their manufacturers, according to Randall Farabee, Ford sales manager at Western Slope Ford.  I encourage you to check with the dealer for any questions you might have.
With custom style and built-in luxury features, this Ford F-150 is an understated beauty and fun to drive while it makes a unique statement on- or off-road. Climb in yourself at Western Slope Ford, west of Mesa Mall on Highway 6 & 50.
