Where did you grow up?
Sara and I both were born and raised in Grand Junction. Both of our parents still live here as well. We are true locals. We moved away for a couple of years only to return with a greater appreciation for western Colorado.

How did you get started in the building industry?
I grew up in the building industry working with my father Alvin Leo Landis (A.L.L. Constructors Inc.). In fact, that is where our name came from, his initials.  I have always had a love for electronics and learned early on that I did not want to hang drywall for a living. I have been pursuing the technology industry since I was 15, starting with car electronics and growing into a leader in automated home and commercial technology design.

How has the industry changed since you got started?
This is an especially funny question in the tech business. Of course the world is a different place than it was when I started. It does not, however, move as fast as people think. There have really only been three major shifts in technology over the past 20 years.  1. The Internet, 2. Widescreen HD TVs, and 3. The App.  Now that we are post-Internet, the HDTV standard and the App, our current systems will upgrade with the latest features easily, most of the time automatically and will not become outdated anytime soon.  It’s a good time to invest in technology and a fun time to be installing it.

What should consumers look for in a new home?

Consumers should look for any technology infrastructure at all. Most builders I see have a very small budget for technology.  Technology can save a significant amount of energy and add amazing value — just ask the vehicle manufacturers.  It keeps you entertained, secure, adds convenience and can cut your energy consumption by 50 percent or more.

Is there a particular type of technology that you prefer to work with?
We specialize in simple-to-use technology. Our target customer is the entire family from grandparents to children who would like to use the benefits of technology without having to be “high tech.” One button ON/OFF for the entire theater and control of anything else electronic such as lights, thermostats, motorized shades, motorized door locks, security systems, cameras, live energy monitoring/management and more. We make all this easy to use from Apps (Apple, Android, Mac or PC)  so that anyone from low tech to sophisticated users can enjoy.

What is the most unusual feature you’ve put in a home?
A motorized TV lift that pops up out of the deck of a pool and swivels toward the clients. This application was challenging in an outdoor environment but the result was amazing.  Waterproof remotes and a sealed lift enclosure make it function perfectly year round.

What do you enjoy when you’re not working?

My whole family rides and races bicycles of all types.  I race professional downhill mountain bikes quite often and train hard for this when I can. We like to travel all over in our RV spending time in the outdoors from the beach to fishing in the mountains. Skiing and snowboarding are of course high on the list and driving our Rock Crawler in Moab. We also go to church and volunteer with children’s groups such as AWANA.

Family: My wife Sara and I have two boys, Porter, age 6, and Emmett, age 3. We also have a super awesome border collie named Bosley.  He hangs out with us at our office most days. We are very lucky to have an amazing team of co-workers that we consider family as well.

What do you enjoy about living in western Colorado?
The outdoors are an easy answer. From the desert of Moab to the best ski resorts and bike parks in the world right here in the Rocky Mountains.  We are two hours from anything we love to do.  I also love the vibe and “regular” people of the Grand Valley.  I don’t prefer big cities or ritzy luxury mountain towns.

What do you see as up-and-coming trends in the building industry?
Energy efficiency products have just begun to have a foothold. I see using a combination of quality building techniques such as insulation, and efficient appliances to work in conjunction with the technology we offer.  LED lighting design using dimmers that shut off automatically can be huge! Motorized shades that block the sun in the summer and open to harvest that heat in the winter. Smarter thermostats that shut off the home when you are not there and energy generation like solar and geothermal allow us to reduce our usage from the grid and eliminate monthly utility bills!

How is a brand-new home safer or more comfortable than a 20 or 30-year old home?
Basically all the technology features that are really life changing are wireless.  It is a similar process in a new home as it is an existing one.  So upgrading an older home is just as possible starting new!
