Balanced scoring lifts GJ girls to opening win

Grand Junction High School’s girls basketball team won its season opener in the Pueblo West Tournament on Thursday with balanced scoring in a 40-25 win over Pueblo Central.

Cori Catlett scored seven points to lead the Tigers, with Sydni Brandon, Madi Marsh, Shafer Rubalcaba, Alisha Jahnke and Sara Wilkinson scoring six each.

The Tigers, who play Coronado at 7 tonight, took an 11-5 lead in the first quarter and were up 17-12 at halftime. An 11-7 third quarter gave them some breathing room.

Palmer 65, Central 16: Dakota Brodie scored six points and Tyler Hays five for the Warriors, who lost their first game under new coach Mary Doane.

The Terrors took a 24-4 lead in the first quarter and were up 41-6 at halftime in the first-round game of the Palmer Tournament.

Central plays Pueblo South at 3:30 this afternoon in the second round.
