Where did you grow up?
My family moved between Texas, Colorado, and California until I was 10. Then we settled in Huntington Beach, Calif.. I graduated from California Lutheran College in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and then lived in Redondo Beach, working for TRW Space and Electronics.
How did you get started in the industry?
My parents Al & Lola started Carpetime in 1975. In 1999 they were getting to an age where they either needed to sell the business or have me come work with them and purchase the business. We moved to Grand Junction in 1999 and have never looked back.
How has the industry changed since you got started?
Carpet has become softer. Vinyl, laminate, and luxury vinyl tile/plank have become more realistic looking with more installation options. There are more options at lower price points for ceramic and porcelain tile as well as wood.
What should consumers consider when looking for flooring?
There are numerous settings flooring gets installed (residential, property management, and commercial), so start with the proper flooring for your setting. Budget is always a consideration relative to the type and quality of floor that gets selected. Every type of flooring has its pros and cons, so I would encourage customers to understand what those are going in so they are not disappointed after a purchase. In addition to insight available from our sales staff, manufacture’s web sites are a great source for care, maintenance, and warranty information.
What’s the most unusual feature you’ve put in a home?
It’s not unusual per se but recently we put a new super soft yarn carpet in our home. It feels like you’re walking on cashmere and is wearing well. We love it.
What do you enjoy when you’re not working?
Spending time with my family. Also golfing, tennis, and skiing.
My wife Kären, sons Luke and Chase, and Buddy the Schnauzer.
What do you enjoy about living in western Colorado?
The great climate, scenery, and it’s not too crowded!
