Crunch time for Mesa State soccer teams

It’s getting down to crunch time for the Mesa State men’s and women’s soccer teams.

The Mesa State men’s team is in sixth place in the RMAC standings with four games left. The top four teams make the RMAC tournament.

“There’s no beating around the bush,” Mesa State men’s coach Josh Pittman said. “We can’t rely on people. We need to win out. Hopefully, the Good Lord will allow us to score some goals.

“We had some good chances against Regis and Metro (three weeks ago when the Mavs’ four-game scoreless streak started), but we didn’t capitalize. We did against UCCS, but Pueblo didn’t allow us many chances. We’re struggling to finish, but it just takes one chance to change the mindset.”

The Mesa State women’s team needs one victory to clinch an RMAC tournament berth.

“We’re not in a bad spot, but we’re very much on the bubble for a regional,” women’s coach Erin Sharpe said. “The Pueblo (win) helped us, but Augustana (S.D.) beat (Minn. State) Mankato. We’ve done better against common opponents. We’re hoping four RMAC teams go to regionals.”

The Mavericks are eighth in the NCAA Central Region rankings with the top six receiving NCAA tournament berths.
