Fruita facility reports sex assault on patient

A male staff member at Family Health West is the suspect in a possible sexual assault against a male patient at the facility reported on Saturday, Fruita Police Chief Mark Angelo said Tuesday.

Police were called just before 1 p.m. Saturday to Family Health West, 228 N Cherry St., while Angelo said the alleged victim is a man who is “at-risk” as defined under Colorado law. The case was still under investigation Tuesday, Angelo said.

The staff member in question has been placed on leave pending the outcome of the case, while families of patients have been notified about the allegation, according to Angelina Salazar, spokeswoman for Family Health West. The claims of abuse were made by one staff member against another staff member, Salazar said.

“We have not found any evidence of abuse,” Salazar said, adding the hospital was doing a separate review of the matter.

Salazar and Angelo said they were unable to comment on a host of questions.

Aside from emergency care services, Family Health West includes assisted-living residences and extended care for Alzheimer’s patients.
