GJ Rockies move to 3-0 with road win
The Grand Junction Rockies got five strong innings from starting pitcher Helmis Rodriguez as they won their Pioneer League road opener 7-3 at Orem on Saturday.
The Rockies also got a two-run home run from catcher Jairo Rosario as they ran their record to 3-0.
Grand Junction made taking a 6-0 lead through three-and-a-half innings look as easy as 1-2-3. The Rockies scored one run in the second, two runs in the third and three in the fourth.
Robbie Perkins started the scoring for Grand Junction, singling Ryan McMahon home after McMahon stole second base.
Raimel Tapia hit a two-run single in the third after Zach Osborne moved to third and Emerson Jimenez to second on a wild pitch.
Jordan Patterson doubled in a run in the fourth, and he scored when Rosario hit a home run to center field.
That gave Rodriguez, who retired the side in order in the second, third and fifth innings a comfortable cushion as he scattered three hits, walked three and struck out three. Orem scored its run off him in the fourth, and it was unearned as Rodriguez helped the Owlz with a throwing error to first base that allowed the batter to go all the way to third base, then score on a single to center.
Orem closed the gap to 6-3 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Rockies scored the game’s final run in the top of the ninth when Osborne doubled in Patterson.
Jimenez, Patterson and Osborne had two hits apiece for the Rockies, who finished with 10 hits.
