GJ tennis team tops Aspen

A pair of three-set wins helped Grand Junction defeat Aspen 5-2 in a nonleague girls tennis match Wednesday in Aspen.

The Tigers’ Carolena Campos triumphed at No. 1 singles after being denied a straight-set win when Caroline Godfrey won 7-6 by outlasting Campos 13-11 for the tiebreaking point. Campos, however, rolled 10-3 in the tiebreaker set to claim the match.

Grand Junction’s McKenna Brooks and Sarah Megan Erb dropped their first set at No. 2 doubles, 3-6, but they stormed back to take the next two 6-0 and 10-4.

Sierra Filutze added a win at No. 3 singles, the Tigers’ Aspen Coleman and Kiana Ziola won at No. 3 doubles, and Jordin Early and Tawni Tubbs won at No. 4 doubles.

The Tigers improved to 4-1 in duals.


Rifle scored six runs in the fourth inning and six more in the fifth to rout Coal Ridge 18-4 in five innings.

Triston Quigley’s three hits included a home run, and he drove in four runs, and Danny Bartels added three hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs for the Bears (4-2).
