Griffins roll in season opener

The Grand Junction Griffins, a club rugby team comprised of high school-aged players from throughout the Grand Valley, opened 2013 with a 59-5 win over Denver East on Saturday at Dixon Field.

Chris Gershon’s four tries led the Griffins, who had five players record at least one try. Marsh Casey and Ryland Perez each scored two, with Wes-Lee Wilden and Chris Graham each chipping in with one. Wilden also booted seven conversions.

Grand Junction will resume its season next Saturday against the Northside Vikings. Game time is 1 p.m. at Dixon Field.
