Tell us about Heath and Company:
I am pleased to say all of us at Metro Brokers/Grand Junction work together as a team. I  am the owner/manager of Heath & Company Realtors. Our specific team right now consists of me, Steph Heald and Debbie Joy.

Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Iowa living about three blocks from the Mississippi River in Davenport, Iowa. Iowa is a great place to be from.

My children and grandchildren are my joy. I have two girls, Jessica and Stacey, and a son, Nick. Nick and Jess are married and Stacey is engaged. I enjoy  watching the kids and the grandkids grow up.  I love to take them boating and fishing.

What do you enjoy most about living in the Grand Junction area?
I  believe our community is basically a “kind” place. For raising kids, for being a citizen, for working, for  living — we have a lot of services and options  if you look and ask. The sunshine, schools, hiking, fishing, trails, arts and entertainment, sports events, and I especially like access to Lake Powell.  There is a lot to do here if you try!  I hope every one has a good 2014!

How long have you worked in real estate?
I was licensed for real estate in Colorado in 1983 and became full time in 1987.  I have seen a lot of changes in our real estate community. I used to be the new guy — now I am the old guy.

What would you consider your specialty?
Family residential real estate sales is most of what I do. It is fun to see friends/clients happy when everything is done. I have now worked with two generations of families and going on three!  I love new construction of houses and development — now after a long lull, new construction is back!
It is a great time to buy a house.

Do you have any accreditations or certifications?
I have a degree from the University of Iowa (Go Hawkeyes!)  I believe in continuing education for Realtors and I have my Graduate Real Institute degree.

What is the most challenging/ gratifying aspect of what you do?
When a family is happy after they have bought or sold a home — that is the most satisfying  aspect of real estate, to me.

Describe your most memorable real estate transaction.
I helped a single mom pick out a home I remember well. We looked at several houses and the buyer picked a home, frankly, that was different than the one I thought was “the best deal.” She loves it. When we talked about why she picked it out she told me her grandmother raised her and the home she picked felt and smelled happy like her grandmother’s house. I learned that every buyer has different desires and hot buttons and they have the right to pick out the house they want. The home should be a refuge and a happy place. Even though I want to protect my clients’ investment they have the right to pick out the house they like.

What is one tip you have for someone looking to buy a home today?
Now is the time to buy a home while our market is still waking up and going up in value. Historically compared, interest rates are still very reasonable.  Get together with a good lender and get prequalified and let’s find you a good deal!

What is one tip you have for someone looking to sell a home today?
Get it ready. Walk out in front and look at your own home with a critical eye. When potential buyers drive by, you have about 10 seconds to make a good impression and get them inside. Clean everything, be the first one to water your lawn in the spring. Don’t put off maintenance. Replace the carpet before you go on the market. Give the buyer a reason to “like” and “love” your house more than the other ones in your price range. If you were going to sell a pickup truck, you would clean and polish it BEFORE you put it up for sale.

What do you see in the future of real estate sales/prices?
Owning a home is still the best investment most families make.  If you have good credit and plan to live in Western Colorado for the next two years, now is a great time to buy.

Why should someone use you as a real estate agent?
After so many years in the business, I try to see what is coming for my sellers and buyers. I try to “see around the corners” and predict and prepare so my clients and friends have a good experience. Our slogan at Metro Brokers is “It’s not just real estate, it’s people.” Every transaction is important. I like to visit with my sellers and buyers and get a feel for what is going on in their life and what is important to them. Fortunately it works!!!
