Q: How long have you been a member of the HBA?
A: 3 ½ years
Q: Give us a brief description of your business and how you think your business benefits from being a member of the HBA:
A: We sell appliances to builders, contractors and individuals. By being a member of the HBA we have involvement with the largest part of our customer base and are able to see them socially at functions and support their organization.
Q: Number of employees?
Q: What’s unique about your business?
A: Unlike the big boxes where a salesperson is commission based and works in a noisy, busy environment; my customers come to my showroom, have a cup of coffee or tea, bottle of water in a relaxed atmosphere and we discuss what their needs are for appliances and their budget, be they a builder or individual. I then work to get them the features and functions they want within their budget.
Q: Anything else we should tell Grand Junction about you?
A: We used to be called Builders & Contractor’s Appliance Distributing, LLC, but my wife and I bought the old owners out and changed the name so people wouldn’t think they couldn’t purchase from us if they weren’t a builder.
Q: What are some of the lessons learned from 2009, and how will that affect how you do business going forward in 2010?
A: Trim overhead by doing away with unnecessary expenses, work smarter and make sure you are providing the best service possible because word of mouth and referrals will grow the business faster than anything else.
Q: What new trends do you see becoming significant to your business and your customers?
A: Obviously Energy Star, while not new, is becoming more and more important. New products that previously were not tested/rated for Energy Star are now available, such as range hoods.
Q: What are some new technologies, legislation, programs or practices that have impacted your business?
A: Legislation on washing machines will impact in a couple of years because the traditional top load washer as we know it today will not be available due to its water consumption.
Q: Look into your crystal ball and tell us about some changes you think may be coming to the valley (or your business) in the next year or two.
A: I am cautiously optimistic with what is happening to my business. If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t have purchased it. Things are gradually picking up, more so in remodeling than new construction. There are however, people out there that want to purchase and have the ability to purchase a new home, so new homes are still being built, at just about every price point.
