Indians’ Riley finishes 21st in 4A state golf

Montrose senior Riley Willis bounced back nicely from a first-round 85 to fire a 76 on Tuesday and led area finishers by placing 21st with a two-day score of 161 at the Class 4A boys golf state tournament at Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen.

Palisade’s Skyler Miller shot a 165 and tied for 30th. He had been tied for 15th after shooting a 79 on Monday.

Montrose senior Zane Sauer shot an 85 on Tuesday to tie for 44th at 171. Rifle seniors Ty Caron and Cody Capwell shot 187 and 188, respectively. Delta freshman Blake Reiher shot 199.

Coronado’s Isaac Petersillie won the individual crown with a 4-over-par 144. He opened with a 70 to tie for second, then shot a 74 on Tuesday for a one-shot win over Wilson Belk of Cheyenne Mountain.

Jakob Rudosky of Montezuma-Cortez tied for fifth and was the top Western Slope finisher, shooting a 9-over 149. His 74 tied for the low round Tuesday. Trevor Bogus of Durango shot 76-77 for a 153 to finish eighth.

Class 3A state golf

Basalt’s Tristan Rohrbaugh played good, consistent golf for two days and brought the Class 3A boys golf state title home to Western Colorado.

Rohrbaugh shot 71 and 70 for a two-round 1-under-par 141 at the Pueblo Country Club course in Pueblo. It was a four-stroke victory over Behrod Keshtavar of Peak to Peak High School.

Rohrbaugh entered the second round trailing the two first-round leaders by two shots, but his 70 tied for the low round of the day.

Jacob Robb of Cedaredge opened with an 81 but struggled on the second day with a 92. He finish tied for 48th at 173.

Boys soccer

Montrose took a 4-1 lead into the half and poured it on in the second half to beat Central 11-4 in a Southwestern League match.

Brian Bond and Vijay Singh each scored two goals for the Indians.

Central was led by Matt Miller, who scored all four goals for the Warriors. It was Miller’s fifth hat trick of the season.

Softball

Danica DeLaHoz tossed a one-hitter as Palisade won the opener of a 4A Western Slope League doubleheader against Rifle, 10-0. Rifle then won a slugfest, 15-13, in Game 2.

“They played how we know they can play,” Palisade coach Megan Stluka said of the opener in which the Bulldogs collected 12 hits and didn’t make an error.

Caitlyn Charlesworth led Palisade at the plate with three hits in the Game 1. Jenna Lucas hit a triple and a double in Game 2 for the Bulldogs (7-11, 2-3 WSL).

Cedaredge 8, Gunnison 6: Winning pitcher Marissa Cantrell went 4 for 5 with a double, and Heather Wilczek, Katie O’Hern, Kristen Alward and Samantha Galley also had multi-hit games for Cedaredge (12-6, 6-2).

Volleyball

Fruita Monument got 13 kills from Jordan Eatwell and 10 kills from Loryn Chiapuzio as the Wildcats beat Grand Junction 25-16, 25-12, 25-23 in a Southwestern League match.

■ Emily Sanburg and Marisa Jahnke had nine and eight kills, respectively, as Montrose (11-2, 5-1 SWL) defeated Central 25-23, 25-18, 25-13 in SWL play.

■ Carson Pipher and Morgan Hartigan had nine kills apiece, and Jessie Holt had five aces as Paonia (12-0, 3-0) defeated Vail Mountain 25-21, 25-15, 25-19 in 2A/1A Western Slope League play.

■ Grand Valley beat Moffat County 25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 28-26 in 3A WSL play.
