Where were you born? How long have you lived in the Mesa County area? What do you like most about it?
I was born at Community Hospital in November of 1966 and graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1985. I graduated with a Bachelors of Business Administration from (then) Mesa State College in 1999. I have lived in the Grand Valley all of my life, except a 3 year detour out of state after graduating high school. Besides being my home town and having close family ties here, I love our Colorado mild climate and the beauty of the outdoors that surrounds our valley.
Family: I had a very busy late 1990’s by getting married in 1993, starting college in 1994, having children in 1996 and 1998 and graduating in 1999.
How long have you worked in real estate?
After graduating from college I decided to get my real estate license and go to work for my dad and the rest is history as they say. He retired in 2007 and turned the ownership and reins of the company over to me
What did you do before that?
Before entering real estate, I worked for the City of Fruita as the Deputy City Clerk and Court Administrator for the Fruita Municipal Court.
What is your specialty and what does that mean for the people you work with?
Joe Hicks Real Estate is a diverse company handling all types of real estate transactions, but I would say our specialty has always been farm and ranch type properties. I find it most interesting to deal with irrigation rights, crop yields and livestock facilities. Because all of the brokers in our office actually live on farms and work with livestock, I believe we bring a first hand knowledge of the needs of our agricultural clients to the transaction.
What is one tip you have for someone looking to buy a home?
In today’s market conditions, I believe it is essential for clients looking to purchase a home to get well accainted with a lender. They need to know exactly what their buying power is and be pre-qualified so we can move quickly on the property of their choice. Homes are selling faster than in the past few years and sellers are needing to be assured that buyers are capable of completing the sale so buyers with a relationship with their lender are able to present more acceptable offers quickly.
What is one tip you have for someone looking to sell a home?
Price and curb appeal. These are the two things that can make their house stand above the rest. Sellers need to clean up, fix up and prepare their property to look the best it can and then price it appropriately for their market.

Having grown up in the Grand Valley, I am familiar with the people and the history of the area. Joe Hicks Real Estate is a small company that provides close personal service with honesty and integrity. My mission is not to get the pay check at the closing table, but to build relationships with families and help them find the perfect property for their needs. Our company enjoys our friendships with repeat clients and always looks forward to building relationships with new clients.
What do you most enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I am married with four fantastic children. We live in Fruita, raise cows but our hearts belong to the horses. My whole family loves to ride horses as well as drive teams of draft horses for fun.
Any final thoughts?
I grew up on 12th and Main Street in Grand Junction, but my desire was to live on a farm and to raise my children with an appreciation for nature, hard work and the agricultural way of life.
