Lannie & Rund GC, Inc.
Where did you grow up?
I’m originally from Huntington Beach, Calif, which is in southern California. I moved here in 2005. Grand Junction is a wonderful place to raise a family, which is a great reason to relocate here.
How did you get started in the building industry?
I started 17 years ago when I was 21. I worked for a family-run construction company specializing in commercial remodeling. I knew I wanted a career in construction and found a company willing to train me. I started out sweeping floors and picking up trash, but eventually worked up to running minor remodel projects and then big jobs — up to 80,000 square feet office space at a given time.
How has the industry changed since you got started?
I specialize in remodels, both residential and commercial, so for my line of work, the explosion of home remodeling shows has had a big impact. These TV shows have benefited us for the most part. They’ve hurt as at the same time because people see something on TV and try to do it themselves without calling a contractor. And the shows don’t do a good job of providing realistic costs. But the ideas generated on HGTV and other networks might possibly make a homeowner pick up the phone and call a remodeling contractor. Twenty years ago it was just Bob Vila on a Sunday morning, but now there are home improvement shows on 24/7 constantly giving people ideas.
Is there a particular style of home that you consider your specialty or prefer to build?
I like the complicated projects — whether it’s the home that’s complicated or the owner. It’s a challenge. I don’t want to build the same thing every day and that’s what remodeling allows us to do. I have a different job every day. I enjoy owners who think outside the box — and want unique finishes or want to use reclaimed materials. We work hard to please our customers. It’s not what I want, it’s what they want. The reason our business is flourishing is because my guys and my subs understand that the customer is always right.
What is the most unusual feature you’ve put in a home?
We’ve taken out the entire center section of a house and redesigned it and tied everything back in and opened up the floor plan. We found a way to salvage majority portion of the home and make the commonly used areas a better fit for the homeowners. This is fairly common in remodels. Grand Junction has a lot of neighborhoods that have been a around for awhile and the house is dated but the location is priceless. We don’t tear the whole house down. Give me your palette — your existing home and location and let’s figure out how we can make it better.
What do you enjoy when you’re not working?
I have a 7-year-old son and a 5-year-old daughter and they are my life. I enjoy coaching my son’s baseball team. We do anything outdoors. I really enjoy to have barbecues with friends and family. I love golf, skiing and boating with family and friends
What do you enjoy about living in western Colorado?
My friends are my family out here and this area is very accommodating for time with friends and family. There’s no commute. No rat race. No long lines. People don’t know what traffic is here.
What do you see as up-and-coming trends in the building industry?
We’re not putting in rooms — we’re tearing down walls and facilitating flow throughout a home. We rarely do additions anymore. Mainly we open up spaces for families to live the way they want to.
