The driver of a smashed pickup involved in a collision with a Kenworth trailer near Loma was hospitalized with serious but non life-threatening injuries, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Michael Barnes, 45, of Grand Junction, was wearing his seat
belt and had to be extricated from his 1999 Dodge Ram after it slammed into a 2007 Kenworth rear-dump trailer.

The Kenworth was driven by 44-year-old Dale Tweedy of Grand Junction. The accident happened near the intersection of Colorado Highway 139 and O 1/2 roads early Monday. The crash was reported at 8:40 a.m.

Barnes’ truck was hauling a horse trailer packed with personal belongings but no livestock.

State Patrol Sgt. Michael Baker said an investigation showed the Kenworth was pulling out from a residence at 1676 13 Road and attempting to turn south on Colorado 139.

In doing so, it turned in front of Barnes’ truck, which was traveling north on the highway. The highway was closed for an hour as emergency responders worked to clear Barnes from his mangled truck.

Alcohol, drugs and excessive speed aren’t suspected as contributing factors, Baker said.

Tweedy was treated for unspecified injuries at St. Mary’s Hospital and ticketed on suspicion of careless driving causing injury.
