Mavericks win region title, advances to World Series

Texas A&M-Kingsville forced a second game and had the bases loaded in the ninth, but Colorado Mesa persevered to win the South Central Region title to qualify for the NCAA Division II World Series next week.

Colorado Mesa senior Austin Kaiser ran down a deep fly ball in the right field corner with the bases loaded for the third out in the Mavericks’ 7-6 victory at Suplizio Field.

Matt Delay (9-2) delivered a gutsy performance two days after one of his poorest outings for the victory. He limited the Javelinas to six runs on 12 hits and struck out four in 8 1/3 innings. Matt Allen came in to get the final two outs for the save.

Austin Wallingford hit a three-run home run in the sixth to give Mesa a 6-4 lead. Freshman Kevan Elcock hit a solo home run in the eighth that proved to be the difference.

The NCAA Division II World Series begins Saturday, May 24 in Cary, N.C.
