Mesa set to face Lancers in wrestling

The Colorado Mesa University wrestling team is back home for the first time in two months.

The No. 14 Mavericks (6-1) host California Baptist University at 7 tonight at Brownson Arena.

California Baptist recently moved up to the NCAA Division II level. It is in provisional status, Mesa coach Chuck Pipher said.

The Lancers may be new to Division II, but they are an experienced program. California Baptist was a top 20 team in NAIA in 2008–09 and 2009–10.

The Lancers are coached by Lennie Zalesky, a three-time All-American wrestler at the University of Iowa and coach of the University of California-Davis for nine years until the university dropped its wrestling program in 2010.

The Lancers defeated Colorado Mesa 27-15 last year in Phoenix.

Jon Gappmaier, ranked third in Division II at 157 pounds, will wrestle despite being injured last weekend in the Grand Canyon (Ariz.) Duals, Pipher said.

James Martinez won’t wrestle tonight, but he will wrestle Saturday. The 149-pound sophomore has a minor injury, Pipher said.

Zak Slotten is cutting weight to get to 174 pounds, but the junior is expected to wrestle next week.

Freshman Daniel Salazar, 125 pounds, remains out this week and likely next week.

Colorado Mesa wrestles Saturday in the Tracy Borah Duals at Western State Colorado University. The Mavericks wrestle Southwest Minnesota State University, Western Wyoming Community College and the Air Force Academy.

Southwest Minnesota State
(7-0) is the only Division II program the Mavericks will wrestle in the meet. The Mustangs are led by fifth-ranked Justin Reinsma at 133 pounds. They defeated Mesa 22-15 last year.

Swimming & Diving

The Mavericks were scheduled to host the Bill & Peggy Foster Duals next weekend, but the meet has been canceled.

They will swim against Manhattan (N.Y.) College on Sunday in San Diego. It is their last meet before hosting the RMAC Championships on Feb. 14–17 at El Pomar Natatorium.

Track & Field

The Colorado Mesa men’s and women’s track and field teams go to Colorado Springs to compete in the Air Force Academy All-Comers indoor meet Saturday.

It is the Mavericks second meet of the season.
