Mesa tennis teams fall to Northern Colorado

Colorado Mesa won just one match Wednesday in dropping men’s and women’s tennis duals to an NCAA Division I school, the University of Northern Colorado, in Greeley.

Mavericks coach Dan MacDonald, however, saw positives in the loss, saying the experience against tough competition will help his teams as they begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play this weekend.

Plus, he said, “Sometimes the scores are a little bit closer than they look.”

Mesa’s lone win came from men’s No. 3 singles player Andres Garcia-Rojas, who dropped his first set and fought back for a 4-6, 6-1, (10-5) win.

“He really got on fire after the first set and played good, solid tennis,” MacDonald said. “He really attacked the guys backhand.”
