Mesa’s Jennings finishes ninth at swimming nationals

Colorado Mesa’s Amanda Jennings finished ninth in the women’s 3-meter diving event Wednesday to post the best finish by a Maverick during the first day of the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championships in Geneva, Ohio.

Jennings finished with a score of 447.1.

Also competing Wednesday for the Mesa women, senior Briana Purkapile swam a school-record time of 2 minutes, 3.88 seconds to finish 12th in the 200-yard individual medley.

The Mavericks are in 17th place in the women’s team standings with 14 points. 

For the Colorado Mesa men, freshman Jarren Brinton swam a school-record time of 9:27.34 to finish 19th in the 1,000 freestyle.

In the 50 freestyle, senior Kent Olsen-Stavrakas finished 32nd (20.73) and sophomore Justin Hastings was 55th (21.17) for the Mavericks.


Colorado Mesa’s Nordic ski team wrapped up a strong showing at the U.S. Collegiate Ski Association Nationals at Mount Van Hoevenburg in Lake Placid, New York.

CMU sophomore Mira Hopkins, from Anchorage, Alaska, earned first-team All-American honors with a fifth-place finish in the classic sprints competition. Teammate Kacie McCleary also advanced into the elimination rounds in the event, finishing 14th. 

For the Mesa men, Duncan Koehn advanced to the quarterfinals and finished in 18th place. 

All five members of the CMU women’s team — Hopkins, McCleary, Courtney Berg, Michelle Peterson and Megan Muehlethaler — were awarded Academic All-American honors.
