Mesa’s new AD to take over April 1

CMU's new AD to take reins on April 1

New Colorado Mesa University Athletic Director Tom Spicer will start his new duties sooner than expected.

After quickly introducing Spicer and his wife, Kathy, at halftime of Monday night’s NCAA Division II women’s South Central Region championship game, CMU President Tim Foster confirmed Spicer will start his new duties on April 1.

Spicer had planned to begin by June 1, depending on what Colorado School of Mines President Bill Scoggins and he decided over the weekend.

Colorado Mines issued a release Monday saying Spicer had resigned and that Marv Kay, the Orediggers’ longtime athletic director, will serve as interim AD. Mines will begin a national search for Spicer’s replacement immediately.

Spicer, wearing a maroon dress shirt and gray sport coat, waved to the standing-room crowd at Brownson Arena, then, flashing Mesa’s “horns” signal with both hands, jogged to the student section, high-fiving students in the front row.

NCAA rules during championship events do not allow teams to have halftime “programs,” so Spicer didn’t speak to the 1,927 fans at the game. Spicer and his wife watched the game from one of the suites above the court with Foster and his guests, and after the game he talked with CMU coach Taylor Wagner and several fans.

Kelsey Sigl was selected the South Central Regional’s most outstanding player, with Katrina Selsor joining her on the all-tournament team for the Mavericks. Also on the all-tourney team were Teisha King of Texas-Permian Basin and Kirsti Degelia and Andrea Carter of Midwestern State.

Packed house

The largest crowd of the season packed into Brownson, with 1,927 in attendance. The student section stood the entire game, and much of the crowd was on its feet in the final minutes.

A line of fans waited before the doors opened at 5 p.m., two hours before tipoff.

Much of the crowd wore white, with students painting their faces and one group painting “M-A-V-S!” on their bare chests.
