Miller’s 3 goals lift Central past Palisade

Matt Miller scored three goals as Central defeated Palisade 4-1 in nonleague boys soccer game Tuesday.

Juan Carlos Barroyo added a goal for the Warriors (3-5), and goalkeeper Lorenzo Archuleta made nine saves for Central.

“Matt Miller’s a phenomenal soccer players,” Central coach Doug Beach said. “This is his third hat trick of the year.”

Beach also lauded Archuleta’s work in the net, saying, “Archuleta had some key, brilliant saves. He was on the ground to make one save, then got up, went to the other side and made another save.”

Montrose 8, Grand Junction 0: Greg Shawcroft scored three goals to lead the Indians (6-3, 4-1 SWL) to a SWL victory. Vijay Singh and Norman Maroquin each scored two goals, and Brayden Reese had five assists.

SOFTBALL

Grand Junction scored eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to rally past Montrose 9-2 in SWL action.

Brittany Arcieri went 4 for 4, and Bree Baldwin was 3 for 5 with two doubles to lead Grand Junction’s 14-hit attack. Meanwhile, Elisha Jahnke overcame illness to scatter three hits and throw a complete game for the win.

“Earlier today she had a 103-degree temperature,” Tigers coach Adam Diaz said of Jahnke. “For her to pitch like she did showed a lot of heart.”

Palisade 10, Cedaredge 9: The Bulldogs scored five runs in both the second and fifth innings to outlast the Bruins.

Caitlyn Charlesworth went 3 for 4, and Jenna Lucas had a three-run double as Palisade overcame seven errors and 12 hits allowed to the Bruins.

Rifle 19, Eagle Valley 3: The Bears took advantage of 13 walks to roll to victory in four innings.

Boys Tennis

Grand Junction won two three-set matches en route to a 6-1 win over Aspen.

Grand Junction junior Aaron Gossage won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Ben Arja and Ian Hegstrom won 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 4 doubles.

Fruita Monument 7, Montrose 0: The Wildcats won every match in straight sets, including 6-0, 6-0 in all three singles matches.

Volleyball

Montrose beat Grand Junction 25-8, 25-23, 25-22. Kayla Roberts had four kills and 20 digs to lead Grand Junction.

■ Carson Pipher and Morgan Hartigan had nine kills apiece as Paonia ran its record to 10-0 with a 25-19, 25-11, 26-24 win over Olathe.
