Montrose falls to Valor in state baseball playoffs

Montrose will have to do it the hard way if the Indians are to win the Class 4A state baseball championship.

Valor Christian, which handed Montrose one of its two losses entering the double-elimination tournament for the final eight teams, edged the Indians again Friday. The Eagles (16-7) triumphed 9-7 over Montrose, then followed with a 21-18 win over Mountain View at Cherokee Trail High School.

Montrose (19-3) will play an elimination game today against Windsor (13-9) at 10 a.m. at Coca-Cola All-Star Park in Lakewood. If the Indians win, they’ll play Durango at 12:30 p.m. at the same site.

Durango won its first-round game 19-5 over Canon City (13-9), but the Demons lost their next game 12-5 to top-seeded Pueblo West (18-4).

Pueblo West and Valor Christian will play at 3 p.m. today. The winner will be the lone undefeated team left going into the next weekend’s final four.

Montrose lost 5-4 to Valor Christian during the regular season.
