Montrose qualifies four for 4A state swim finals
Clay Zentmeyer and Lars Knutson each qualified for the finals in both of their individual events Friday at the Class 4A State Swimming and Diving Championships in Thornton.
Zentmeyer enters today’s finals with the second-fastest time from the preliminaries of the 200-yard freestyle, and he will be seeded fifth in the 100 butterfly.
Knutson had the eighth-best time in the preliminaries of the 50 freestyle and will be seeded 11th in the 100 freestyle.
Meanwhile, the two juniors will be joined by freshman Daniel Hurford and senior Jacob Solseth on the Indians’ two finals-qualifying relays. Montrose is the ninth seed in the 400 freestyle relay and the 10th seed in the 200 medley relay.
“It was a really good meet for us today,” Indians coach Silas Almgren said. “I think Clay had a special day for us today.”
Also competing today will be Montrose sophomore divers Ryan Ormsbee and Ethan Erickson. They will compete in the preliminaries, followed by the finals if they make the cut.
Hurford didn’t reach the finals in his individual event, the 100 freestyle, but he swam a personal-best time in it and swam legs on all three Montrose relays.
“Daniel Hurford had quite a nice day today,” Almgren said. “He improved his times, and he did a nice job on all three relays.”
