One Source Lighting
Where did you grow up?
I grew up spending about 27 years of my life in Colorado, 19 years in North Dakota and the rest in California and Missouri.
How did you get started in the industry?
I worked for Roberts Electric in Grand Junction from 1979 to 1986 as a sales and marketing representative. In 1986 I went to work for Westinghouse Electric Supply Company in Bismarck, N.D., which is when I took an interest in the lighting industry working with commercial customers, contractors, and industrial customers. I attended many different lighting schools put on by companies like GE, Phillips Lighting and many more. I also started and operated a lighting division for an electrical contractor in Bismarck for about six years, where I learned the lighting retrofit business and how to design and turnkey lighting projects from start to finish.
I started One Source Lighting in Bismarck in 1998 as a full-service commercial lighting company and added the residential lighting showroom a year later. I added a second location in Billings, Mont., in 2003 and Grand Junction in 2005.
How has the industry changed since you got started?
Nobody is more committed to the lighting industry than One Source Lighting. Technology has transitioned from simple incandescent and fluorescent technology to today’s technology that is changing daily and very confusing for the consumer and end user. There are so many levels of quality and performance that it is impossible for a consumer to evaluate.
What should consumers look for in new lighting?
One Source Lighting will be building a new Commercial/Residential LED Lighting Education Lab in our lighting showroom at 552 25 Road in the next few months that will incorporate the newest in technology and education topics to help the local consumers learn and evaluate the new lighting technologies that are introduced in the marketplace today.
We will be showing consumers the LED technology that is available and affordable to homeowners and commercial businesses. The LED light bulbs are finally affordable and reliable with adequate lumen output.
Is there a particular style of home that you consider your specialty?
I love helping design contemporary style homes and commercial businesses. My interests seem to fit well with today’s modern technology. Our other designers prefer more traditional and transitional style design.
What do you enjoy about living in western Colorado?
Western Colorado is home for my family and myself. We love the mountains, hunting, jeeping and skiing. We live in the country with animals on a small hobby farm.
What do you see as up-and-coming trends in the lighting industry?
I’m convinced that the local economy will continue to improve and homeowners will be able to take advantage of all the new energy efficient technology that is available. Homeowners want to save money and be more energy efficient and help the environment.
