Our readers think Quotable Movie contest is far out, man

There are shocking developments in what is becoming an unpredictable and hotly contested Most Quotable Movie Ever! bracket.

After re-running the blank bracket in the Monday, Dec. 2, newspaper and getting tremendous response, fellow features writer Melinda Mawdsley and I re-tabulated the results for Round 1. The original winners remained strong except the tie between “Sudden Impact” and “On the Waterfront” was broken, with “On the Waterfront” emerging victorious with 57 percent of the new vote tally.

Also, in the original contest between “The Blues Brothers” and “Caddyshack,” we announced “The Blues Brothers” as winner, but an infusion of brackets took that race to a tie. Looking at that same contest in Round 2, “Caddyshack” earned more votes so that’s what we sent up against “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” in Round 2.

And as we mentioned, passions are starting to run high! It’s getting personal as underdogs upset much higher seeds, and we’ve heard from a few readers about the original bracket’s seeding and omissions: one reader noted “Treasure of the Sierra Madre” as a shocking oversight (and no doubt, “We don’t need no stinking badges!” is highly quotable) and another reader cited “Scarface.”

Almost as tough, in fact, as choosing the champion. That’s why we give an admiring shout-out to Gail, who submitted two brackets so that her top two movies each got a chance to be champion. We’re just stunned we didn’t think of that ourselves.

As a reminder, you have until the end of business today to turn in a bracket if you haven’t yet. Completed brackets will be entered into a drawing for movie theater gift cards and a movie-themed gift basket from Seasons to Follow, 612 Main St.

Visit our blog “Breakfast for Dinner” at GJSentinel.com for thoughts about quotable movies as we get closer to the Dec. 20 announcement of the champion movie and prize-winning participant.

Here are the Round 2 results, based on the winners of the Round 1 contests. Stay tuned for Round 3!
