Palisade wrestlers hold off Rifle

Palisade avoided surrendering a pin in the final match and held off Rifle for a 33-31 win in a Western Slope League wrestling dual Thursday.

After Palisade’s Kyauna Martinez won by first-period pin at 113 pounds for a 33-27 Bulldog lead, Rifle’s Oscar Ruelas need to win by pin at 120 to tie the team score. Ruelas put Palisade’s Quinn Day on his back a couple of times, Bulldogs coach Brian Rush said, but Day limited him to a major decision.

“Quinn did a good job of fighting him off,” Rush said.

The Bulldogs also got a key victory at 145 pounds when Trevor Garcia scored a takedown with about four seconds left in the first overtime for a 3-1 win.

In another dual, the Bulldogs used five pins and six forfeits to beat Basalt 66-9.
