I have a very dear friend who has a very large family. Luckily, I’ve been made, according to them, an ‘official’ part of the family, the fact of which honors me greatly.
This family gathers every year on one spot for a family camping trip. Relatives from all across the American west and sometimes the east gather here in Western Colorado, taking over a camping area and generally spending a weekend having a great time. There’s kids and grandparents, great uncles & aunts, dogs, boats, fishing poles, campfires,  more dogs, one inflatable kayak that my friend swears would hold me but that mysteriously didn’t have oars, some more kids, a few more dogs and finally me, the city boy, who’s favorite camping activity (and one that I have perfected over a lifetime) is toasting the same marshmallow multiple times (my record is somewhere around six times, with a single, standard marshmallow).
The first time, I stayed in a tent, and discovered that Grand Mesa can get cold at night in September.  This last time, though, I was offered a place in a camper (specifically, a toy-hauler), and oh what a difference it makes.
After a day on the trail (the ATVs being the toys being hauled), and more attempts at toasting marshmallows, it was immensely nice to retreat to the padded bed and relatively bug-free environment of the camper, as well as being able to enjoy the other amenities: the refrigerator, the bathroom and the company.
I’m sure most of those reading this have a bit more affinity for the greater outdoors, but I’m equally sure you can appreciate the comforts and cargo space of motorhomes, RVs, and trailers, not to mention the fun and even utility of ATVs.
The Daily Sentinel’s RV Open House Weekend is happening next weekend, Oct. 5 through 7, and with season-ending prices, events, financing and opportunities, presents a great time to start making your camping trips a little easier, which in turn allows you to take more less-woodsy people like me along for the ride, so it’s a win-win for both of us!
Each of the dealers taking part in the event are bringing their own specials and approach to the event, letting you tour and look for the best deal. Every dealer is offering specials and clearance items, but each also have their own approach.
Humphrey RV’s Paul Roach said that they’re throwing their Customer Appreciation Days event on Friday, Oct.6 & Saturday, Oct. 7 (the Montrose store’s event is happening this weekend), they’re not only bringing manufacturer reps for some of their popular lines of trailers, like Arctic Fox and Keystone, and offering seminars for maintenance and improving RVs (such as winterizing, satellite system installation, generators), they’re also bringing in related vendors like Colorado E-Bikes, KOA and more.  There’s also going to be smoking up 80 pounds of pork shoulder and grilling up hamburgers to provide free lunch catered by Rub One Out barbecue.
Brad Carver of family-owned Centennial RV is excited about showing off some “new floorplans that have come in that are different from what we’ve had before.”  He’s looking forward to showing off a new trailer by Grand Design that’s a half-ton-towable fifth wheel, with a design built so you don’t need to use a slider hitch on a short bed pickup. “With this design, it pivots at the nose rather than the hitch.”  He stressed they always have sale prices, but at the event, “all of our used inventory is marked down. We’ve got really aggressive pricing, and we want to sell it before winter hits. For used products, it’s definitely the best time to buy.”
Having just moved to a new location, Bob Scott RV’s is setting up to show off with their grand opening on Saturday, Oct. 7.  On that day, there’ll be some door prizes and giveaways to celebrate.  Mike Singer said they’re looking forward to showing off popular small towables, like R-Pods, Geo Pros, Tag and Tab and more. “They’re small towables that we can get anybody into, even somebody with a smaller car.”
Carville’s Auto Mart’s Darin Carville is offering huge savings off of 2017 & 2018 models, trying to move more out for more inventory, and noting the ultralights and pull-behinds.  But it’s not all trailers. The Coachman Prism models built on diesel Mercedes chassis are favorites of Western Slope dwellers, and they’ll have special pricing and special financing.
“We take all trades,” Darin said, “cars, trucks, powersports, RVs and even motorcycles. We’re also unique in that we’re the only buy-here, pay-here for financing on RVs.”
Jerry Carosella of Rimrock Trade Center said “We’re excited about giving people our absolute very lowest price, so we can clear out our current inventory for the 2018s coming in soon. It’s a great opportunity to get a deal on a new trailer or used motorhome, and even our consignors are ready to deal.  Financing is being offered, up to and including nothing down, no-payments until next year on Wildwood by Forest River, with the right credit and financing.”
Great deals are great deals, but Connor Culver of Affordable Trailers is upping the game. “We’re having s’mores,” he said, “to introduce people to our newly expanded parts department.  We’ll also have specials, discounting things quite a bit, both here and in our Montrose store.”
(I know a guy that might be able to help with the marshmallow toasting…)
In an exciting addition (and highlighting the other meaning of recreational vehicle),  All-Terrain Motorsports will be joining in with an all-day open house event on Saturday with free donuts and coffee. Look for specials on Kawasaki, Polaris and CanAm side-by-sides, with sale prices on snowmobile apparel, and select ATV accessories will be discounted. Polaris Factory Authorized Clearance Sale will also be happening with big discounts on select side-by-sides.
Western Rockies Federal Credit Union is taking part and wants you to call them to look for great rates on RV financing.
So, if you’re looking for a nice place to sleep in the great outdoors, or the opportunity to set up a base camp of your own, the RV Open House Weekend is the best opportunity to find season-end prices and deals on RVs, trailers, motorhomes, and even all-terrain vehicles and more. Check out these dealers October 5 through 7 to find the fun (and even financing) that fits your lifestyle. You’ll have to find your own family, though…
