Raimel Tapia slides into second with a stolen base Tuesday night in the third inning of the Grand Junction Rockies’ 5-4 loss to Great Falls.

Great Falls snuffed a late-inning Grand Junction comeback to force a series split as the Rockies fell 5-4 in Great Falls, Mont., on Tuesday night.

The Rockies (20-12) spread three runs across the seventh and eighth innings, but were held scoreless in the top of the ninth.

Ryan Garvey walked with one out, but was thrown out on a fielder’s choice. As the Voyagers (16-16) attempted to turn a double play, a throwing error allowed Wesley Jones to advance to second base. Raimel Tapia struck out to end the game.

Grand Junction was a combined 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position and left six runners on base. Despite the clutch-hitting woes, Jose Briceno went 4 for 4 with a double, a home run and a pair of two-out RBI. It was Briceno’s seventh home run of the season.

Tapia extended his hit streak to 22 games with a single despite striking three times.

The Rockies out-hit Great Falls 10-8, but also committed two errors.

Joel Payamps (4-3) was saddled with the loss. He tossed 4 1/3 innings giving up three runs, all earned, and struck out three batters. Grand Junction relievers Carlos Yan and Daniel Palo held the Voyagers scoreless in the final two innings.

Grand Junction has today off before returning home to host Idaho Falls.

The Rockies currently have a three-game lead over Orem in the race for the first-half title in the Pioneer League.
