Shots fired during Montrose traffic stop

Shots were fired during a routine traffic stop by Montrose County Sheriff’s deputies this morning, sending one person to a hospital with unspecified injuries.

The wounded party was an occupant of the vehicle stopped by deputies, said Bobbie McCoid, Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman. McCoid said she couldn’t confirm whether the individual had been shot.

Deputies reported shots fired, while requesting an ambulance, following a stop on Highway 145 in Naturita around 9 a.m. today, the Sheriff’s Department said in a brief news release.

“There were no serious injuries to deputies,” the release said. “There is no public safety risk at this time.”

“Further information on the incident is not available at this time,” the release continues.

The 7th Judicial District’s Critical Incident Team, including representatives of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and 7th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, are at the scene investigating.

Highway 145 at milepost 106 is restricted to one lane of travel because of the investigation, McCoid said.
