Scholarship sponsors sought
The Foundation for Cultural Exchange seeks sponsors to participate in a scholarship drive to help fund continuing education for students in Grand Junction’s sister city of El Espino, El Salvador.
Sponsorships are accepted year-round but the FCE needs help to meet its goal of funding 19 scholarships by Dec. 31.
Cost is $300 per year to fund a high school student and $1,000 per year for university students. Businesses, organizations, a group or individuals are able to sponsor a student. Partial scholarship opportunities are available.
In El Salvador, the government funds public education until the eighth grade. Students must maintain good grades, attend monthly scholarship meetings, participate in workshops and contribute to community service projects to be eligible for a scholarship.
The Dave Harmon Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in 2010, memorializing the late Colorado Mesa University sociology professor who first led a group of CMU students to El Espino, resulting in the sister city relationship with Grand Junction. Sponsors are encouraged to correspond with students via letters and the FCE Facebook page.
To sponsor a student, contact Board President Anna Stout, 970-433-2897, or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
