“Chance favors the prepared mind.” — Louis Pasteur

Scott Vogt, a teacher at Palisade High School, relies on a famous chemist’s observation to guide his teaching.

Vogt and other Grand Valley educators have received thanks from students or former students for helping them prepare their minds to better seize life’s opportunities. Acknowledging Teacher Appreciation Week May 2-5, the letters below conclude a series that has run online since Monday.

Dear Mr. Vogt,

I have been very lucky to have such a good teacher like you. I’d like to express my sincere gratitude for all the efforts you have done for your students.

Being a foreign exchange student, it has been a pleasure for me to be in your class. You are a very intelligent teacher. It’s been always interesting for me to discuss different topics with you.

And I’m very happy that I’m in your geography class at the moment and I can share my experience and knowledge about my own country.

Best regards,
Indira Adigamova

Dear Mrs. Schwarz,

You are the best teacher because you give us pencils when we don’t have them. You notice when we are on task, and you make learning fun. No one hardly ever falls behind.

You love to read and write, and that’s why I love school. School would be boring without you!

Your number one student,
Michael Downs

Dear Sergeant Yates,

You have inspired me to do my very best in everything I do. When I first walked into your classroom, I was this girl who never took chances. But by being in your class and seeing things differently, I am a greater student.

I’m not sure what it was about you that made me so scared; maybe it was your uniform. But whatever the case was, I’m glad I met you; you have taught me a lot, and I’m happy to be in your class for the next three years.

Sincerely,
Private (Salena) Phillips

Dear Ms. Huntley,

I want to thank you for being so helpful and caring. You have helped me understand math better than any other math teacher has. The way you explain math makes it easier for me to learn it.

When I ask you a question, you don’t get mad like other teachers do. You explain it with a smile. The way you’re happy all the time makes me want to go to class. So, I want to thank you, Ms. Huntley, for all your help and kindness.

Sincerely,
Trinity Mattingly

Dear Mr. McKee,

Thank you for being a great teacher and friend last year. You were my favorite teacher at Mt. Garfield. I just wanted to let you know the respect I have for you, and for all of the U.S. history you taught me. I am happy that you became the P.E. teacher.

I’m sure you have to deal with a lot of punks at that school. I remember I did.

Jace says that you’re his favorite teacher also. He is kind of a wimp, though; you need to toughen him up. Feel free to pick on him for me.

I am looking forward to seeing you at summer weights and my football season. Thanks for recruiting me to football; I appreciate it. I may not be very good at it, but I am making life friends and it keeps me in shape.

Your buddy,
Gage Morse

Dear Terri Batchelor, Chris Hobbs and Casey Manuppella,

I just wanted to thank you for all you guys have done for me. All of you were like a mom to me, and you supported me through everything. I have grown a lot for that. I got taught everything that I needed to know with you guys.

I am now a young woman who has grown so much just from having the support I needed from you all. I still wish all of you were my teachers. The BAHAMA MOMMAS was the best core in the world.

Love,
Sheila Martinez
