As one of America’s first building supply stores, The Sutherland Lumber Company pioneered the “cash-and-carry” building material business and helped shape the industry we all know today.
The Sutherland Lumber Company is a privately-owned, family run organization founded 94 years ago by Robert R. Sutherland.
Based in Kansas City, Missouri, Sutherlands is one of the largest privately-owned Home Improvement Center chains in the United States. The company operates a variety of independent retail lumberyards and home improvement centers stores located in 13 states. The stores range in size from small lumberyards to large 140,000+ square foot warehouse stores. The combined buying power of Sutherlands is passed onto customers.
At Sutherlands, lumber is their business, not a sideline. Each store stocks a large variety of lumber and building materials especially selected for the region. As the line of materials grew, so did the stores.
Sutherlands also specializes in complete building packages, including storage sheds, garages, post frame buildings and entire houses. Sutherland’s staff of knowledgeable experts can help plan any project, large or small.
Sutherlands currently has 56 Stores in 13 States. They have a great organization with a knowledgeable staff in every store. Every individual in the company contributes and is a vital reason for the success of the stores.
As Herman Sutherland said, “There have always been giants walking down the road and trying to do us in. The great new warehouse stores have brought out a new model, a new system that seems to work. We have met this new giant, as we always have, with flexibility, a determination to change and learn, and with an organization that cannot be duplicated anywhere. We’ve continually had our normal share of serious problems; floods, fires, tornadoes, wars, attacks by organized labor, adverse legislation, and always not enough money to do what should be done, but every successful business experiences these at some point in time. But we will always persevere.”
