Nobody told me I could test drive this week’s 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Touring-L Plus by finding a nice, shady spot, slipping a Blu-ray disk into the player and chilling out in the second row.  If only I’d brought a disk!
The surprisingly loaded Pacifica I drove comes with the Uconnect Theater package that includes two 10-inch HD rear touchscreens with built-in games and apps, HDMI connectivity for plugging in gaming consoles and wireless headphones so the driver doesn’t have to hear the aforementioned game consoles.
But you don’t even need consoles to play games. The built-in games and apps include solitaire, sudoko and a few others for various ages. My favorite app is the “Are We There Yet” app, which ties into the navigation system to let kids or passengers know how much of the trip they have left (kind of like the ones in airplanes!).
One of the nice parts of minivans is that they can take all of that effort put into making SUVs and crossovers tough enough to handle rougher trails, and turn it into an exceedingly roomy, exceedingly comfortable road vehicle, and the Pacifica does not disappoint.
Rob Fisher, new vehicle sales manager at Grand Junction Chrysler called it “The coolest minivan in the world.” I can’t argue with that description, partially because I enjoyed the refinements, and layered in what Chrysler calls the most advanced technology available in a minivan in its class.
Some of those things combine, including active noise cancellation (which works just like your noise canceling headphones, but, you know, for your vehicle).  It makes the leather interior and pleasant two-tone accents a soft and welcoming place.
Once you’re comfortable, the kids (or whoever is in the back seats) are distracted, and you’re on the road, the technology helps in the form of the Advanced SafetyTec Group, with features that help control the vehicle, in some cases quite directly, including parallel and perpendicular parking assist (it steers the Pacifica as you control the brake, gear and gas when you’re parking), the Adaptive Cruise Control (set a distance between you and the next vehicle, and the Pacifica will run up to your cruise control speed or slow to match the vehicle in front, even around curves).
With adequate power from the 3.6L V6 engine, the Pacifica handles in a way that is best described as refined. It’s got heft to it as it handles the road, just like a good, soft-riding luxury vehicle should be.  The steering wheel is solid and steers politely.  This is a vehicle that makes you wish you were driving it across country.
The key fob allows you to open both side doors, the rear door and even start the engine. I’m kind of disappointed that it doesn’t actually steer and drive the car, so I could be chilling in the back seat as I watch a movie and let the Lane Keep Assist keep me, well, in the lane. On second thought, it’s probably best that it doesn’t have that feature.
