This Week in the Legislature, Jan. 21, 2013

The 2013 legislative session will heat up in its second full week, with bills dealing with civil unions for same-sex couples to measures to lower college tuition for the children of illegal immigrants.

■ Today: Legislature closed in observance of Martin Luther King Day.

■ Tuesday: House Business and Labor Committee will consider a bill to require measures to be reviewed for their financial impact on businesses.

■ Wednesday: Senate Judiciary Committee will hear a bill to allow same-sex couples to enter into civil unions. Also, the Senate Business, Labor and Technology Committee will hear a bill to grant collective bargaining rights to firefighters.

■ Thursday: Senate Education Committee will consider a bill to lower college tuition rates for the children of illegal immigrants.

■ Next week: Various House committees will hear bills designed to boost jobs and the economy, while in the Senate, lawmakers will eye some of the first measures intended to curb gun violence.
