Trustee loses seat with move

Members of the Palisade Board of Trustees reluctantly accepted the resignation of Trustee Amanda Rich on Tuesday evening, leaving the seven-member board one shy with Rich’s departure.

Rich is purchasing a home that is literally one lot outside of town limits, which will preclude her from serving as a trustee.

“The good news is they have found a house they really like, which will hopefully serve them well,” Town Administrator Rich Sales said. “But unfortunately it is just outside the town limits, and under statutory law and our own rules, it has to be in the town limits for her to remain on the board.”

“Maybe you guys will annex my area in sometime soon, and we can revisit this,” Rich joked.

Rich has been a trustee for just nine months, having won a seat on the board in April 2012. She received more votes than anybody in that election — with 273 — and because of her vote total, she was elected to a four-year term.

“I appreciate everyone’s time and energy. We’ve done a lot in the nine months I’ve been on the board,” she said Tuesday evening. “I wish that it was different, but it’s just not right now.”

She added: “I own a house ... my first house ever, so that’s pretty cool.”

By law, the board has 60 days to fill the vacant seat. If it’s not filled within that time, an election is automatically triggered.

It doesn’t look like it will come to that. Mayor Roger Granat said the board likely will turn to David Adams, the person who was runner-up in a process held last year to replace resigning Trustee Robert Magill. Adams was runner-up to current Trustee Robynn Sundermeier, named to the board in September of last year.

Sales said the board has asked him to contact Adams to gauge his interest, which he plans to do. If Adams is still interested, the board will discuss and vote on the appointment or decide a different process for naming Rich’s replacement.

Whoever is named to fill Rich’s seat will serve until the next municipal election, slated for April 2014.
