Underwood first JUCO player selected

J.D. Underwood became the first player from the JUCO World Series field to be selected in the Major League Baseball draft.

The pitcher/designated hitter for Palm Beach (Fla.) State College, Underwood was selected in the fifth round, 154th overall, by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The son of former big league pitcher Tom Underwood, J.D. has committed to the University of Miami.

Pitcher Nick Gardewine of Kaskaskia (Ill.) Community College, was taken in the seventh round (220 overall) by the Texas Rangers.
