Wildcats, Warriors keep regional seeds for state softball tournament

The Fruita Monument and Central high school softball teams could end up playing each other in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A state tournament.

The Wildcats and Warriors kept their regional seeds, two and seven, for the Class 5A state tournament. The Colorado High School Activities Association announced the tournament pairings Sunday.

“It’s unfortunate (CHSAA) couldn’t have done something to have us play later, at least the semifinals,” Fruita coach Jamie Dunn said. “That’s how it worked out. I’d rather be sitting where we are at.”

The state tournament for all three classifications takes place at the Aurora Sports Park, 18601 E. Sports Park Drive, in Aurora. The 5A tournament takes place at Complex A, the 4A is at Complex B and the 3A is at Complex C.

Admission to the Colorado State Softball Championships is $8 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens.

Fruita Monument (19-2) is the No. 2 seed and plays No. 15 seed Pomona (14-6-2) in the first round Friday at 12:15 p.m. The Panthers were ranked in the Denver Post top 10 at one point this season.

Central (18-3) is the No. 7 seed and plays No. 10 seed Standley Lake (14-8) Friday at 12:15 p.m.

“Standley Lake is a better team than their record,” Central coach Scott Else said. “They have been in and out of the top 10 as has Pomona and Fruita. There are no easy games anymore.”

Three-time state champion Legacy (21-0) is the No. 1 seed in the 5A tournament and is on the other half of the bracket.

Montrose (12-10) received the No. 16 seed in the Class 4A tournament and plays top-seeded and two-time defending state champion Wheat Ridge (20-1) in Friday’s first round at 10 a.m.

“That’s kind of what I expected,” Montrose coach Joe Bollinger said. “Until we go over to the (Front Range) and win some games, we’re not going to be seeded very high.”

Rifle (8-11) is the No. 16 seed in the 3A tournament and plays No. 1 seed Berthoud (17-4) in the first round Friday at 10 a.m.
