World Series website redesigned, ready for the big hits

Featuring social media feeds and an interface upgrade to highlight videos and photos, the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series website, http://www.jucogj.org, underwent a redesign this winter. The new website launched in February.

The new sections of the website break down individual needs for the tournament. The “visitor info” tab features tourist information about restaurants, hotels, ticket prices and Suplizio Field. Other tabs include information for coaches and the media, as well as information on the various teams in the tournament.

Jermaine Williams, the athletic event coordinator at Colorado Mesa University, was in charge of the redesign.

“The thing that we wanted to do with the website was make it more user-friendly,” Williams said. “The previous website had some things that were hard to find, particularly with the history section, box scores and those sorts of things.

“With (Daily Sentinel sports reporter) Patti Arnold and (CMU assistant sports information director) Dave Jahnke, we came up with a core list of things we knew we needed to have on the front page. We wanted a page where people from Texas to California to Washington — people following the World Series — could go to find live stats, exactly where to go for video, exactly where to go for audio. I think that was the first main focus.

“The second focus was a new look, a fresh look, because we know that we’re going to have between 200,000 and 300,000 hits during the week of the JUCO World Series. We wanted to make sure we put a first-class show on on the field, and we wanted to do the same thing with the website.”

The facelift was modeled after the CMU athletics website, with a similar look and feel to http://www.cmumavericks.com.

Beyond sepia-toned backgrounds, both sites feature clean layouts, and both took cues from websites of other major sporting events.

“Being the guy that helps run our website, Dave Jahnke helping run our website, we know our website very well,” Williams said. “We used the same company (Sidearm Sports), but we took a lot of the design things from (the CMU athletics) website.

“But we also looked at the Super Bowl website, and a lot of the functions they have on the Super Bowl website for their one big event. We looked at what the NCAA does for the World Series website, what the Little League World Series does on their website, and how we can pull from those websites to make sure our website mirrors those three- or four-day or one-big day events.”
