1,500 sign up for Tour of the Moon

Tour of the Moon over Rim Rock Drive on Colorado National Monument last Oct 6th.

Registration for the 2013 ICON Lasik Tour of the Moon is running 15 percent of the 2012 inaugural year, promoters said, prompting tourism officials to predict the event will generate $500,000 over the Oct. 5 weekend.

Nearly 1,500 riders have registered so far, according to promoter Mike Heaston of Event Marketing Group. The event has a cap of 2,000 participants.

“It’s very popular,” Heaston said, noting that people familiar with cycling are familiar with the Tour of the Moon, which he reinvigorated for the 2012 event.

That event generated about $500,000 as well, giving it a “veritable Ride the Rockies kind of impact” on the Grand Valley economy that officials expect to see continue this year, said Barbara Bowman, manager of the Grand Junction Visitor and Convention Bureau.

“We are ecstatic about Tour of the Moon,” she said.

The 2012 event attracted 1,810 participants from 36 states and Heaston said he expected to sell out the event this year.

So far, registrants include people from 28 states and Canada, he said.

The event is geared perfectly to the demographic that tourism officials hope to attract, Bowman said, noting that many haven’t been to Grand Junction or seen Colorado National Monument before.

More than half the participants in last year’s event told the promoters they had never been on the monument, Heaston said.

Many of them stayed through the weekend last year to ride the monument again and show friends and family members what they saw as they pedaled the length of Rim Rock Drive.

The race this year will be begin and end in Grand Junction and include a tour of the Fruita area.
