7 — Trujillo wins state wrestling title in all-District 51 final

Grand Junction’s Jacob Trujillo puts Fruita Monument’s Isaac Rodriguez on his head during the 145-pound state championship match in February, the first matchup of District 51 wrestlers in 21 years.

Grand Junction sophomore Jacob Trujillo capped a perfect season with the Class 5A state wrestling championship at 145 pounds, defeating Fruita Monument sophomore Isaac Rodriguez 10-4 in their final at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

That match marked the first time in 21 years two District 51 wrestlers met in a state final.

Trujillo (47-0) defeated Rodriguez (31-6) four times during their sophomore campaigns, triumphing 4-1 and 7-3 during regular-season matches and winning by injury default in the regional finals as Rodriguez did not want to risk further damage to an injured knee.

Trujillo’s state title came one year after he finished as the state runner-up in 5A at 120 pounds.

Palisade junior Dalton Hannigan joined Trujillo as a state champion, winning the Class 4A state title at 126 pounds with a 12-4 victory over Cheyenne Mountain’s Bobby Amond.

It was the first time Hannigan, a three-time state qualifier, placed in the state tournament, and he finished the season with a 42-3 record.

Hannigan also became the first Palisade state wrestling champion in 10 years.
