Abigail Simpson hired as Mesa women’s lacrosse coach
Mesa State’s next sport, lacrosse, begins play in the fall. Monday, the Mavericks completed the coaching staff, hiring Abigail Simpson as the women’s coach.
AJ Stevens is on board as the men’s coach and director of lacrosse, which has a split season, playing in the fall and spring. Spring is the primary season.
Simpson is currently a volunteer coach with Long Island Select Lacrosse in New York and is completing her degree in education and physical education at State University of New York Cortland, where she played lacrosse for two years. She graduates in December, 2010, and will then move to Grand Junction to take over the program.
“I am extremely excited and honored to be given the opportunity to be the inaugural women’s lacrosse coach at Mesa State,” Simpson said in a news release. “I plan on building a strong and winning tradition of Division II women’s lacrosse in the state of Colorado and will embrace all of the challenges that come along.”
Before playing at SUNY Cortland, Simpson was a preseason All-American player and team captain aat Nassau Community College. She’s also coached at Kings Park Youth Lacross Camp, For the Love of the Game Camp and the SUNY Cortland Women’s Lacrosse Sport School.
