Agility Nationals, other dog events at fairgrounds

The dog days of summer are behind us, but a couple of upcoming dog events will keep your tail wagging just a bit longer.

The Dogs On Course in North America (DOCNA) Agility Nationals come to the Mesa County Fairgrounds Veterans Park, 2785 U.S. Highway 50, Friday through Sunday, Sept. 24–26.

The championship trials events include standard agility, jumpers, 2 Gamblers events, Trigility and the National North American Challenge Event in which 177 pre-qualified teams compete against other teams from across North America.

Dog agility is a competition dog sport that is similar to equestrian jumping. Dogs are handled through a series of timed obstacle courses with tunnels, teeter-totters, zig-zag weave poles, jumps and more.

The competition is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free for spectators. More information can be found at

The next dog event scratching at the door is the Grand Valley Kennel Club AKC Dog Show in the Mesa County Fairgrounds’ Community Building from Thursday, Sept. 30, through Sunday, Oct. 3.

The event is free to the public. A daily parking charge of $5 will be collected or a four-day pass can be purchased for $15 at the gate.

Keep this on your scent radar: The Western Slope Animal Expo is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, also at the Mesa County Fairgrounds.

There will be a beginner bee keeping demonstration, Fido Follies show and dog Olympics and a pet costume contest. A hands-on equine health assessment demonstration will take place along with pig painting with Pig-a-sus, horse painting with Gateway Canyons Resort, a pet rehabilitation demonstration and more.

Tickets are $3 for adults and children are $1. Call 201-9239 for information.
