Airport to build 3-story complex for new offices

After paring down construction costs of about half-a-million dollars, a new, three-story administration building was approved recently for the Grand Junction Regional Airport.

Shaw Construction was the lowest bidder for the $6.1 million project to create a 22,000-square-foot facility that will house both a community room and a bay for emergency vehicles. The building will feature office space, a board meeting room and other rooms dedicated for fingerprinting and testing employees.

Bids originally came in more expensive than anticipated for the project, which is the first phase of the airport’s multi-phase terminal expansion. The airport’s architects, Fentress Architects, worked with Shaw Construction to cut back on some costs.

Reduced cost changes will only slightly affect the aesthetics of the building, said Amy Jordan, deputy director of administration at the airport.

For example, stainless steel railings will be replaced with railings of painted steel. Windows will be a bit smaller, and some stucco work will replace colored concrete.

Members of the Grand Junction Regional Airport Authority unanimously approved the bid contract during a special meeting Tuesday.

Construction of the administration building on the airport’s eastern side will not affect operations for the general public, Jordan said. Construction is expected to last about nine months.

Full build-out of the airport’s terminal will probably span the next 10 to 15 years and the administration building is designed to fit seamlessly with other phases of the terminal expansion, Jordan said.

Currently, airport administration officials work off-site as officials from the Transportation Security Administration occupy the airport’s on-site office space.

Funding for the administration building is almost entirely grant-based, with $4.1 million in federal grants, $1.8 million in state grants and $300,000 in matching funds.
